The Butcher's Masquerade
On the sixth-floor Hunting Grounds, Carl and Donut turn the hunter war, Signet's Vengeance quest, Miriam's vampire outbreak, Gehenna Bramble, and the Butcher's Masquerade into a coordinated campaign that evacuates the changelings, kills Vrah, Diwata's mortal vessel, and Queen Imogen, gives the Princess Posse a Faction Wars seat, and ends with Prepotente destroying the seventh floor before Eva forces the Crown of the Sepsis Whore onto Katia.
Overview
The sixth floor opens as the Hunting Grounds, where off-world hunters enter at level 50 after a short grace period and can already have pets, traps, and infrastructure in place. Carl refuses to surrender the Gate of the Feral Gods without compensation, and attorney Quasar negotiates four cretin mercenaries as collateral, including Bomo with Teleport to Stairwell and the Sledge with Zerzura. Carl chooses the explosives-focused Agent Provocateur specialization, while Donut becomes a Legendary Diva and Katia takes the HAZMAT endorsement. Before the hunters are released, Carl uses Bomo to reach Zockau, marks the hunter Chin'Dua with the Ring of Divine Suffering, infects Vrah's sister Xindy through Super Spreader, and detonates a chain of barrel bombs around the hunter district. The attack kills dozens of hunters and traps others inside the city, establishing Carl's strategy for the floor: exploit hunter rules, collect Hunting Trophy hands for the Butcher's Masquerade, and reduce the hunter population before the endgame.
The hunter war develops alongside political and media pressure outside the dungeon. Vrah and the Dark Hive become a persistent threat after Carl's attack kills Xindy, and Vrah later accepts divine intervention from Diwata through her mother, Circe Took. Carl and Donut also learn that Beatrice survived the collapse and has been taken off Earth. Donut confronts her during Odette's show and rejects Beatrice's attempt to reclaim their former relationship. During the same period, the Valtay Corporation acquires 51 percent of Borant Corporation while Borant retains operational control of the crawl. The change intensifies legal and institutional instability around the dungeon, and later hunter testimony indicates that the dungeon AI is going primal unusually early and increasingly insists on enforcing its own interpretation of the rules. Carl's CrawlCon appearances, sponsorship changes, and encounters with Circe reveal how strongly off-world factions are now trying to influence both the hunters and the crawlers.
A separate chain begins with Tsarina Signet's renewed Vengeance of the Daughter quest. Carl and Donut help Signet assault Fort Freedom, where Samantha accidentally pulls the borough boss Claude Sludgington to the shore and the fight kills Miss Nadine. The attack liberates the Naiad Confederacy and advances Signet's quest toward Queen Imogen, the High Elf ruler and sixth-floor country boss. At the same time, Carl and Donut learn that the dinosaur Big Tina is a transformed ursine and that Kiwi, the Mongoliensis pack leader charmed by Donut, is Tina's mother. That thread intersects with a spreading vampire disaster after Miriam Dom reveals that she is the progenitor of the outbreak. Miriam chooses to let sunlight kill her so the infection chain will collapse, despite Carl refusing to kill her directly. Her death cures thousands of infected creatures, including Big Tina, but leaves behind Odious Creepers. When the crawlers fail to destroy every Creeper before sunset, the system launches Gehenna Bramble, a rapidly spreading wall of lethal vegetation that consumes most of the floor and funnels survivors toward the High Elf castle.
The approaching Butcher's Masquerade therefore becomes both a trap and an opportunity. Carl's group plans to use the event to kill the remaining hunters, resolve Tina's recital, protect Lucia Mar, attack Queen Imogen, and evacuate the Hump Town changelings before Gehenna Bramble reaches them. The key evacuation mechanism is Zerzura: if the Sledge casts it on a friendly sixth-floor town near collapse, the town skips directly to the ninth floor. Because the original changeling settlement will be destroyed too soon, Carl arranges to gather the changelings inside the High Elf castle instead. A series of sponsor gifts sent through different crawlers also converges on Donut and the final plan, including the I Take It All Back potion, Pawna's Cries, Katia's stat-boosting beanie with I Need My Personal Space, Imani's hammer, and the Enchanted Stick of Cascadia's Screams. Carl increasingly recognizes that sponsors are coordinating survival tools while being unable to state their intended use openly.
Inside the Masquerade, Queen Imogen warns Carl that Apito's peace seal will punish anyone who breaks the ritual. Carl cancels his plan to initiate violence, but the situation destabilizes anyway. Diwata has already infiltrated the castle, Signet is unexpectedly invited directly into the protected ballroom, and Samantha restores crawler magic while the outside assault destroys the sentinel towers. Donut charms Imogen's familiar Ferdinand and converts him into her minion. Signet then deliberately sacrifices herself to cast Ink Marauder, leaving behind physical memory constructs while breaking the Masquerade's divine peace. Donut's dinosaur performance becomes the opening for the attack. Mongo kills Vrah, Donut uses I Take It All Back to restore Kiwi from a dinosaur into an ursine, and Big Tina finally recognizes her mother, completing The Recital. At the same time the Sledge finishes Zerzura, transferring the damaged castle and qualifying occupants, including the changelings, Ferdinand, Kiwi, Big Tina, and Signet's constructs, directly to the ninth floor.
Everyone left behind falls into the empty castle crater, where the AI converts the aftermath into a four-team boss battle among the surviving crawlers, the remaining hunters, Queen Imogen's forces, and Diwata. Donut combines her trained Laundry Day spell with Pawna's Cries and Pawna's Tears to exceed the level needed for Carl's plan. Rather than stripping the immortal deity itself, Laundry Day removes Circe Took from Diwata's divine manifestation; Diwata returns to the Halls of Ascendency and Circe is killed by her own mantis offspring. Carl uses Tripper to make the final hunter, Zabit, detonate his own mines. The crawlers then concentrate physical attacks on Imogen. Britney's Slate Butterflies draw Imogen's lightning into a devastating blast that knocks Carl unconscious, and Prepotente lands the killing blow with a potion. The Vengeance of the Daughter is completed, but many crawlers and allies are dead or badly injured.
In the aftermath, Donut admits that she feels disturbingly numb about the deaths. Carl tells her that the emotional distance is a protective response that may fail only when she is safe enough to grieve, and she finally cries. The apparently dead Popov brothers are then found as separate Nodling Yearlings. Because children are ineligible for the crawl, the system transfers them to the surface kinder facility, allowing them to escape alive. Carl and Donut are also named co-warlords of The Princess Posse, which takes an open ninth-floor Faction Wars slot. Carl immediately uses the live feed to campaign for removal of the safety protections that shield faction sponsors from the lethal risks faced by crawlers. Prepotente identifies Queen Imogen's recovered memorial crystal as Memorial Crystal: Apito, which should be impossible if Apito is alive, and Carl's Emberus quest updates to require the same item as possible evidence in Geyrun's murder.
The Epilogue begins on the seventh floor, The Great Race. Borant repeatedly tries to impose control effects on Carl, Donut, and Prepotente, but the dungeon AI negates every intervention. Prepotente recognizes the floor as a Prince Rupert's drop-like structure whose weakness was foreshadowed by Miriam's Boots of Kiznet's Final Flight and by sponsor-distributed tools. Using the potion, Enchanted Stick of Cascadia's Screams, and hammer, he cracks the starting chamber and causes the entire seventh floor to shatter, sending every crawler directly into the eighth-floor portals. Carl and Donut then enter an eighth-floor location-selection chamber. Carl recommends the Bahamas because his Book of Lore covers that region; Donut agrees but clicks the wrong location, and the source does not identify where they will actually begin. The point of view then shifts to Katia, who finds the injured Eva, disables her escape options, and kills her. Eva's final act is to place the Crown of the Sepsis Whore on Katia. The crown melds into Katia's body and means that only one of Katia or Donut can descend from the ninth floor to the tenth. The book ends with Katia recognizing that she hurts the people around her.
Main Characters
- Carl - a Primal Compensated Anarchist and Agent Provocateur who uses explosives, the Ring of Divine Suffering, legal leverage, sponsor clues, and increasingly elaborate rule exploits to wage war on the sixth-floor hunters and prepare for Faction Wars.
- Princess Donut - Carl's cat companion and party leader, now a Legendary Diva whose Charisma, bard skills, dinosaur control, Laundry Day spell, and public influence are central to the Masquerade plan and the final boss battle.
- Katia Grim - a Doppelganger and HAZMAT specialist who coordinates allied crawler operations, pursues Eva across the floor, helps Carl's group through the Masquerade, and ends the book involuntarily bound to the Crown of the Sepsis Whore.
- Mordecai - Donut's manager, alchemist, and dungeon expert who develops anti-undead tools, explains hunter, divine, and floor mechanics, and helps translate Carl's increasingly complex plans into workable tactics.
- Prepotente - Miriam Dom's goatlike crawler companion, whose grief after Miriam's death drives him through the Creeping Apocalypse and whose sponsor clues let him destroy the entire seventh-floor Great Race before it can begin.
- Miriam Dom - an elderly crawler whose vampire state makes her the progenitor of a floor-wide outbreak; she ultimately allows sunlight to kill her so the infection chain collapses and thousands of victims are cured.
- Tsarina Signet - leader of the Vengeance of the Daughter quest, whose campaign against the Naiad Confederacy and Queen Imogen culminates in her deliberate self-sacrifice to cast Ink Marauder during the Butcher's Masquerade.
- Queen Imogen - the High Elf ruler and sixth-floor country boss, Signet's half-sister and Ferdinand's master, whose attempt to complete Apito's protected Masquerade ends in the post-Zerzura four-team boss battle.
- Vrah and Circe Took / Diwata - Vrah is the Dark Hive hunter who becomes Carl's principal hunter enemy; her mother Circe sponsors the deity Diwata, whose manifestation is ultimately stripped away by Donut's Laundry Day spell.
- Samantha / Psamathe - the disembodied lesser deity allied with Carl's group, who scouts, carries attacks, infiltrates the Masquerade control system, and repeatedly supplies information about divine mechanics.
- Big Tina and Kiwi - Big Tina is the transformed ursine dinosaur boss at the center of The Recital; Kiwi is her mother, initially transformed into a Mongoliensis, whom Donut restores so Tina can finally recognize her.
- Eva Sigrid - Katia's long-running enemy, who survives the Masquerade battle long enough for Katia to kill her and then uses the Crown of the Sepsis Whore to create a future ninth-floor conflict between Katia and Donut.
- Lucia Mar - a powerful and unstable crawler whose shifting personalities include the child Jill; her condition and the remote influence of her dog remain unresolved while Carl's allies try to keep her alive through the Masquerade.
