Assistant Investigator Dinios Kol arrives at the Haza estate to find Commander Taqtasa Blas consumed by a rapidly growing plant erupting from his skull, a grotesque discovery that triggers a wider investigation into a biological weaponization scheme. Dinios reports the scene to his mentor, Immunis Anagosa Dolabra, a blind investigator whose sharp deductive skills identify the plant as a variant of dappleglass, a pathogen previously used to devastate the Oypat canton. The inquiry quickly expands beyond a single murder when a massive leviathan breach at the Sapfir sea walls is revealed to be the result of ten Imperial Engineers simultaneously transforming into vegetation, confirming a coordinated sabotage within the Engineering Iyalet.

Dinios and Ana travel to the city of Talagray to trace the conspiracy, navigating a landscape where political intrigue and environmental decay mirror the corruption they are hunting. Their investigation uncovers a network of illicit transactions involving the Haza family, who have been withholding a dappleglass cure to manipulate land values and secure political favors from young officers. As Dinios interviews witnesses and uncovers hidden reagent keys, he discovers that the sabotage was facilitated by Captain Kiz Jolgalgan, a rogue Apoth, and that a second, more brutal killer is systematically eliminating witnesses to the plot.

The investigation takes a violent turn when Dinios and his allies discover the bodies of key witnesses Rona Aristan and Yonas Suberek, both killed by a precise strike to the skull. This discovery points to a "twitch," a superhumanly agile soldier modified for combat, who is revealed to be Fayazi Haza's personal axiom. The climax occurs when the twitch attacks the Iudex tower, forcing Dinios to utilize dormant combat instincts to survive. Ana lures the creature into a trap using dappleglass, causing the assassin to undergo a grotesque metamorphosis into vegetation before Dinios delivers the fatal blow.
