Overview
In 1964, twelve-year-old Cory Mackenson lives with his parents in Zephyr, Alabama, where ordinary routines coexist with the supernatural stories and experiences that shape his understanding of the town. Cory writes stories, rides his bicycle Rocket, and spends time with his friends Davy Ray Callan, Ben Sears, and Johnny Wilson.
The central mystery begins when Cory and his father, Tom, see a car sink into Saxon's Lake. Tom dives after it and finds a murdered man handcuffed to the steering wheel. The body is not recovered, but Tom continues to experience dreams connected to the crime. Cory follows clues involving a green feather, two parrots, and the name Hannaford while the Lady, the leader of Bruton, helps Tom interpret what he has seen.
Cory's year also includes conflict with the Blaylock family, the loss of Davy Ray, and events surrounding Bruton's new civil rights museum. These experiences take place amid segregation and racial violence in Zephyr, including a planned attack on the museum that is exposed after an unexploded military bomb falls into Dick Moultry's basement. Cory's investigation eventually identifies Dr. Lezander as Gunther Dahninaderke, a fugitive Nazi doctor involved in the murder at Saxon's Lake.
The closing section returns to Cory in 1991 as he visits Zephyr with his own family. He finds a smaller and altered town, revisits his former home, and learns that the Thaxter mansion has become the Zephyr Home for Boys. The return places the events of 1964 within Cory's later life as a writer and parent.
