There Is No Antimemetics Division

There Is No Antimemetics Division follows the Unknown Organization's attempt to study threats that erase, suppress, or consume information about themselves. Marie Quinn leads the Antimemetics Division, where operatives depend on mnestic drugs and repeated rediscovery to work around missing memories. Early cases establish the problem's scale: Simon Lee survives Adrian Gage only by weaponizing stored information, Andrew Hilton reveals that earlier Antimemetics groups have repeatedly erased themselves after encountering the same enemy, and the Division discovers that people and entire stretches of its own history are disappearing. Quinn's marriage to concert violinist Adam Quinn has already become one of those losses. When U-4987, the memory-eating entity they call Sunshine, erases Adam from Marie's life, Marie concludes that the erasure is protecting him from the larger threat and orders every remaining trace of their marriage removed.

The hidden enemy is U-3125, a vast idea complex that pervades reality outside specially shielded rooms. Researchers who understand enough of its pattern become visible to it and are destroyed along with people in the same conceptual headspace. Antimemetics groups around the world vanish, and Quinn's own Division shrinks from thousands of people to a few dozen while repeatedly forgetting the war. A sealed recording finally explains the cycle, but U-3125 attacks Wyeleigh as soon as Quinn carries the knowledge back outside. Quinn injects herself with Class Y mnestic so she can no longer forget, reaches the Division's hidden engineering vault, and discovers that the expected countermeme project is absent. With her colleagues hollowed out and the site lost, she activates an antimemetic warhead that erases Wyeleigh and the Division from the world's awareness without harming U-3125 itself.

U-3125 then completes its takeover of human civilization. Adam, whose natural resistance to antimemetic influence is unusually strong, is captured and altered with everyone else, but Sunshine extracts the surviving part of him from the transformed world. Guided first to the ruins of Wyeleigh, Adam finds Marie's body, her Class Z mnestic, U-7381, and the records that explain U-3125. Sunshine releases Marie's stolen memories and then sacrifices itself to give Adam the instant needed to kill Red, one of U-3125's human manifestations. Adam follows Marie's evidence to the older Stanmoor site, where Ed Hix has spent years alone developing a different kind of weapon. Hix could not physically build the impossible irreality amplifier, so he constructed a conceptual anchor that could make the idea of such a machine real in ideatic space.

Adam does not carry the seed idea Hix needs, but Marie did. Using the Class Z mnestic, Hix reverses the usual relationship between event and memory and restores an animate memory of Marie through Adam. Hix administers antiserum to keep the process from restoring anything else, while the restored Marie identifies the ideal at the center of her life's work: people deserve protection from fear, the Organization's principle that "Freedom means no fear." Hix's system amplifies Marie and that ideal into WILD LIGHT. In ideatic space, WILD LIGHT supplies a context in which U-3125's supposedly inevitable structure collapses, freeing human ideas from it. Marie cannot return to ordinary human existence and leaves for the far reaches of ideatic space. Years later, Mahlo can see only the negative shape of the catastrophe: missing time, missing cities, and countless missing people. Meanwhile, the supposedly extinct Cryptomorpha gigantes have survived outside human perception, showing that even the Organization's best records remain incomplete.
