Prelude
A detailed containment protocol for U-0055, an entity described as a 'self-keeping secret' or 'antimeme,' is outlined. Housed in a highly secure vault at the UO Primary Archive Facility at Black River, the containment unit is a 5.00 × 5.00 × 2.50m room, shielded with cement and electromagnetic interference. Security personnel are instructed not to be posted outside, and the nature of U-0055 is peculiar: while individuals can observe and record its appearance, the information fades from their memory shortly after. This leads to a paradoxical situation where extensive logs exist, but no one can recall the content or the entity itself, causing a cycle of rediscovery and subsequent forgetting.
The document elaborates on the memetic and potential physical dangers of U-0055. Despite detailed observations and records, the information about its appearance and behavior is quickly forgotten, and security personnel who monitor it via CCTV emerge exhausted and amnesiac. The containment unit's construction and purpose remain a mystery, and the personnel at Black River uniformly deny its existence when questioned. This cyclical forgetting and rediscovery create a constant state of alarm and confusion within the organization, highlighting the entity's profound impact on human memory and consciousness.
An addendum from 2008-11-10 suggests that U-0055 might be an autonomous or remotely controlled agent, possibly inserted by a third party to observe or interfere with the Organization or other Unknowns. The document concludes with the unsettling realization that no action can be taken to counter this threat, emphasizing the entity's insidious and uncontrollable nature. This sets the stage for the novel's exploration of the dangers of antimemes and the challenges faced by the Organization in dealing with such anomalous entities.
Key Events
- U-0055 is described as a self-keeping secret that causes memory loss in those who observe it.
- Security personnel and researchers become amnesiac after interacting with U-0055.
- The hypothesis that U-0055 is an autonomous or remotely controlled agent is introduced.

Chapter 1: Induction
Marie Quinn is summoned to the office of Mahlo, the Organization's UK and Ireland director, after he has inexplicably forgotten her and the Antimemetics Division. His apparent assistant, Levene, treats Quinn as a security threat. Quinn explains antimemetics, shows Mahlo the partially self-suppressing U-0055 file, and gives him the Class W mnestic medication he was supposed to be taking. As the dose restores Mahlo's ability to retain the relevant information, Quinn explains that stronger antimemetic Unknowns can erase whole bodies of knowledge and that she herself lives with U-4987, an invisible entity she has trained to consume selected memories.
Quinn then shoots Levene with the gun she had secretly taken from him, using U-4987 to erase his memory of the theft. She explains that Mahlo could not simply have forgotten his scheduled mnestic dose: someone close to him had to prevent him from taking it. Levene is not on the Organization chart, has no pass or desk, and is himself a humanoid antimeme that had inserted itself beside Mahlo. Mahlo accepts the diagnosis and resumes the mnestic regimen, while Quinn sends Levene's body for research.
Key Events
- Quinn reintroduces Mahlo to the Antimemetics Division after he misses his Class W mnestic regimen.
- Mahlo takes a Class W mnestic and begins recovering access to information about antimemetics and U-0055.
- Quinn reveals U-4987, the memory-eating entity she has trained to consume selected memories.
- Quinn kills Levene and identifies him as a humanoid antimeme that had inserted itself beside Mahlo and prevented his medication.

Chapter 2: Introductory Antimemetics
Overwhelmed by the bizarre and dangerous nature of the Unknowns he has just learned about, Junior Researcher Lee retreats to a secluded corner of the cafeteria to digest the information. His solitude is abruptly shattered by the appearance of Adrian Gage, a man who seems out of place without a security pass. Gage's presence is unsettling, and Lee soon realizes that Gage is an antimemetic entity that consumes memories and information, rendering Lee invisible to others and causing him to forget crucial details about his own life.
Desperate to alert others, Lee finds them oblivious to his plight. As Gage's presence becomes increasingly threatening, Lee flees to the basement. In a moment of quick thinking, he uses a hard drive as a weapon, overwhelming Gage with data and neutralizing it. This act of resourcefulness catches the attention of Quinn, the Antimemetics Division chief, who congratulates him on his competence.
In the aftermath, Lee meets with Quinn, who reveals that he has actually been working at the UO for over a decade, but Gage erased his memories. Quinn explains that Lee is an experienced instructor and researcher in the Antimemetics Division, responsible for training new recruits and conducting research. She assigns him the task of completing the U-7175 entry, investigating the fate of Gage's victims, and developing countermeasures, highlighting the ongoing nature of the threat and the cyclical challenges faced by the division.
Key Events
- Lee encounters Adrian Gage, an antimemetic entity, in the cafeteria.
- Lee successfully neutralizes Gage by using a hard drive as a weapon.
- Quinn reveals that Lee is an experienced instructor and researcher in the Antimemetics Division.
- Lee is tasked with completing the U-7175 entry and investigating Gage's victims.
Characters Appearing
- Adrian Gage

- The importance of quick thinking and resourcefulness in combating unknown threats
Chapter 3: Unforgettable, That’s What You Are
Marie Quinn uses Class X mnestic treatment to temporarily rejuvenate the dying Andrew Hilton, founder of the modern Antimemetics Division, so that memories buried behind decades of forgetting can be recovered before the treatment kills him. Hilton recalls an earlier British Army project, the Unthinkables, which developed antimemetic weapons during and after World War II. Their first bomb erased the knowledge required to build itself; a later bomb was used in 1951 to erase a rapidly spreading cult after the Organization absorbed the project. Hilton also realizes that the Antimemetics Division has repeatedly encountered an older enemy and then destroyed knowledge of itself to survive.
Restoring Hilton's memories also restores the danger. He explains that the unknown enemy notices anyone who understands it and that the Division's recurring self-erasure is a containment loop. Before his voice is destroyed, he can only begin to identify it as "Five. Five..." A gigantic, mostly unseen spider-like being manifests through and around Hilton. Quinn cannot fight it directly, so she injects herself with an L2 amnestic, jumps from the rising boat into the lake, and survives because forgetting her causes the entity to lose track of her.
After medical recovery, Quinn adds the missing episode to the Division's map of lost time. Geoff Ives shows her that the emergency beacon at the lake was activated under an identifier belonging to no known person. Quinn concludes that someone else had been with her and may have saved her life, but that person has been erased from the records and from memory. The incident reinforces her suspicion that the Division is losing people as well as time.
Key Events
- Class X temporarily restores Andrew Hilton's youth and buried memories so Quinn can learn the history hidden behind the Division's repeated forgetting.
- Hilton reveals the Unthinkables, the early antimemetic bombs, and a recurring enemy that forces Antimemetics to erase knowledge of itself.
- Restored knowledge re-exposes the old threat; Hilton gives only the fragment 'Five. Five...' before a vast unseen entity manifests through and around him.
- Quinn escapes by chemically erasing her own memory and jumping into the lake.
- Quinn and Ives later find evidence that an erased, unidentified person was present at the lake and triggered her emergency beacon.

Chapter 4: the Ones Who Walk Very Slowly
The U-2256 file describes Cryptomorpha gigantes, an enormous species of South Pacific gigafauna whose antimemetic camouflage made the animals nearly impossible to perceive or remember. Adults stood more than a kilometer tall yet weighed only a few tons and could walk across the ocean surface. The people of Takaluʻi could perceive them through the mnestic effects of kāketou and called them lopoʻongakau, "the ones who walk very slowly," spirits said to maintain the horizon.
The Organization began studying U-2256 after recognizing the chemical similarity between kāketou and Class W mnestics. Its researchers discovered that photographs and other detailed records of the animals rapidly decayed, while simple paper descriptions lasted longer. A field generator that defeated the camouflage allowed the first close photograph of an individual in 2002, but the observation killed it. Researchers then suspected that even passive observation might be contributing to the species' accelerating decline.
The file records the last known U-2256 individual as dying in 2006. Afterward, the species' antimemetic corrosion continued to spread through the remaining records, including the Unknown entry itself. Because the file treats the species as extinct, no new observations can replace what is disappearing, and it estimates that the surviving documentation may be completely contaminated within a few years.
Key Events
- U-2256 is documented as kilometer-tall South Pacific gigafauna protected by antimemetic camouflage.
- Takaluʻians use the mnestic substance kāketou to perceive the creatures and call them lopoʻongakau.
- Organization observation and a camouflage-neutralizing field generator are linked to harm and population decline.
- The file records U-2256 as extinct while its surviving paper and electronic records continue to decay.
Themes
- Observation and Harm
- Cultural Memory
- Information Decay
Chapter 1: Immemorial
Trainee researcher Oli Morgan takes her first routine operational mnestic dose and suddenly notices U-9429, a colossal carved stone looming beside Wyeleigh that ordinary perception edits out. Quinn takes Morgan onto the monolith and explains that it is a memorial left by a technologically advanced human culture destroyed thousands of years earlier by a lethal Category Epsilon idea complex. The culture may have had its own equivalent of the Organization and Antimemetics Division. Quinn uses the site as an orientation lesson: humans can forget anything, but some catastrophes must be deliberately remembered.
At the top of U-9429, Morgan sees something Quinn cannot: a gigantic pillar-like mass of spiders approaching with a wounded young man riding it. The rider can see Morgan and announces that he intends to kill her. Quinn tries to summon Hazardous Response and force Morgan away, but the entity immobilizes her. Morgan's heart stops, and Quinn cannot revive her.
Quinn later sees the rider herself as he sends a flood of spiders down the passage toward her. From his words she learns that they have met before and that he remembers an incident at a lake. Quinn has only moments to preserve the discovery, but no time to write it down. She steps backward across U-9429's memory-suppression boundary. The entire encounter, including Morgan's death, immediately disappears from her awareness, and Quinn calmly returns to Wyeleigh for her scheduled inspection of U-2200.
Key Events
- Oli Morgan's first operational mnestic dose allows her to perceive U-9429, a memorial to a human culture destroyed by a lethal idea complex.
- Quinn teaches Morgan that forgotten civilizations and prior antimemetic wars may have existed.
- Morgan perceives a colossal spider-like entity and its wounded rider, who targets and kills her.
- The rider confronts Quinn and refers to a prior encounter at a lake.
- Quinn crosses U-9429's suppression boundary and instantly forgets Morgan, the rider, and the attack.

- Oli Morgan
Themes
- Civilizational Forgetting
- Antimemetic War
- Memory Boundaries
Chapter 2: Where Have You Been All My Life
Marie Quinn catches an intruder in her home and learns that he is Adam Quinn, her husband of seventeen years. She has no memory of him because U-4987, which Adam and Marie call Sunshine, has eaten the part of her life connected to him. The Organization verifies Adam through extensive independent records and shared memories among senior staff. Flashbacks reconstruct how Marie first met him during the U-8051 infestation, where the concert violinist's mild natural resistance to antimemetic effects helped him notice the anomaly and survive beside her. Their relationship grew from that encounter into marriage.
Adam tells Marie that her life outside work has also disappeared from her memory and that, before Sunshine erased him, she had been fighting a hidden war and losing colleagues she could no longer name. Marie realizes that the war explains the Division's unexplained vacancies and that Sunshine is reacting to the same threat. Adam can perceive the entity's agitation and concludes that it is trying to remove him from Marie's life.
Marie finally understands that Sunshine is not attacking Adam but trying to protect him from something connected to her. She decides to complete the erasure. She locks Adam in containment, orders his history rewritten so that they were never married, has all physical evidence destroyed, and orders the staff involved to undergo memory erasure, with herself last. She leaves the Class Z autoinjector unused and declares that her husband is dead.
Key Events
- Quinn discovers that Adam Quinn is her husband, a relationship erased from her memory by U-4987.
- Organization evidence and flashbacks reconstruct Adam and Marie's first meeting during the U-8051 incident and their later marriage.
- Adam reveals signs of a hidden war that Marie herself no longer remembers.
- Marie concludes that Sunshine is erasing Adam to protect him from the larger threat attached to her.
- Marie orders Adam relocated, their marriage erased from the record, and everyone involved, including herself, amnesticized.
Themes
- Love and Erasure
- Protective Sacrifice
- Identity Through Memory
Chapter 3: Case Colorless Green
A reminder sends Quinn to the strange U-3125 containment unit, whose public file says only that a senior Antimemetics staff member must enter every sixty-three days and emerge through an amnestic purge. Inside, she finds a sealed room full of notes, diagrams, and recordings from researchers who repeatedly rediscover the same problem. A recording of an earlier Quinn explains that the room is inverted containment: U-3125 is not inside it. U-3125 pervades the rest of reality, and the room is one of the few places shielded from its influence.
The recording explains that apparently unrelated anomalies are manifestations of one vast idea complex. Anyone who assembles enough of the pattern for U-3125 to "see" them is destroyed along with people in the same conceptual headspace, leaving only holes in memory and research history. Antimemetics groups around the world have vanished. UO Antimemetics has fallen from thousands of people to a few dozen, repeatedly rediscovering an enemy that kills the people who understand it. Schematics attributed to Ed Hix suggest that a countermeme might be possible, but constructing it without rediscovering U-3125 appears impossible.
The current Quinn refuses the fatalism of her recorded predecessor. She remembers a disused heavy-engineering vault thirty floors under Wyeleigh and infers that it may contain a weapon built by an earlier iteration of the Division. She survives the airlock's amnestic purge with enough of the plan intact to act. Outside, Simon Lee has already been replaced or hollowed out by U-3125 and attacks her with a knife. Quinn escapes as the assault on Wyeleigh begins around her.
Key Events
- Quinn enters the U-3125 inverted-containment room and discovers records from repeated forgotten investigations.
- A prior Quinn explains that U-3125 pervades reality and destroys researchers who understand enough of its pattern.
- Quinn learns that antimemetics research groups worldwide and most of her own Division have already been erased.
- Quinn infers that Wyeleigh's sealed B30 engineering vault may contain an earlier plan or weapon.
- A compromised Simon Lee attacks Quinn as U-3125's assault on Wyeleigh begins.
Themes
- Inverted Containment
- Asynchronous Research
- Knowledge as a Cognitohazard
Chapter 4: Your Last First Day
U-3125's attack has stripped Marie Quinn of her knowledge of the Antimemetics Division so thoroughly that she believes it is her first day. Wyeleigh is collapsing around her, its staff dying or becoming hostile non-people. Working from instinct, Quinn realizes that her competence proves she has lost memories rather than experience. She also remembers that she already injected herself with Class Y mnestic, a lethal treatment that permanently destroys the ability to forget and therefore makes her resistant to further antimemetic erasure.
As the Class Y takes hold, every suppressed perception and memory floods back at once. Quinn remembers killing Ives in self-defense and recovers the plan she has reconstructed many times: reach the sealed engineering vault at basement level thirty and use the anticipated countermeme system. She arrives with U-7381, an anomalous ray gun, and expects to find Ed Hix and an irreality amplifier.
The vault contains neither Hix nor the machine Quinn imagined. Instead it holds an antimemetic warhead designed to erase Wyeleigh and the Antimemetics Division themselves. It cannot harm U-3125; it can only sterilize the current outbreak by making the Division, its site, and its people conceptually absent. Dying from Class Y overload, Quinn collapses. A hollowed Simon Lee and other infected operatives breach the vault and prepare to mutilate her. Quinn quietly tells Simon that none of them ever existed. The warhead finishes powering up, and the world goes black.
Key Events
- Quinn realizes U-3125 has erased her memories of the Division while leaving her trained instincts intact.
- Class Y mnestic restores suppressed memories and gives Quinn temporary immunity to further antimemetic erasure at the cost of fatal neurological damage.
- Quinn reaches B30 and discovers that the expected countermeme machine is absent.
- The only weapon present is an antimemetic warhead that can erase Wyeleigh and the Division but cannot damage U-3125.
- As infected former colleagues close in, Quinn activates the warhead and erases the Division's local existence.
Themes
- Identity Without Memory
- Last-Resort Erasure
- Institutional Self-Destruction
Chapter 5: Quinn’s God
The U-2200 file describes Gua, a non-corporeal being inhabiting a prehistoric limestone monolith and claiming to be the Johorean god of forgetting how to ride a bicycle. Its only confirmed anomaly, besides telepathy, is harmlessly consuming a person's ability to ride a bicycle. The Organization considers Gua low-risk and profoundly unreliable, especially when it claims to have repeatedly erased bicycles from human history.
An interview transcript shows an exhausted Marie Quinn visiting Gua after a disastrous week. Gua insists that she must stop working long enough to recover and proposes increasingly ridiculous remedies, from a month in Barbados to psychedelics and champagne. Quinn rejects each suggestion because the Antimemetics Division is too understaffed and she believes she must remain constantly available.
The exchange eventually turns to Adam. Quinn says her husband is not cleared to know the details of her work because she wants to protect him from it. Gua tells her that she must trust Adam and then bluntly advises her to go home and make love to him. Quinn considers the advice and leaves. The conversation is about preserving her personal connection to Adam, not bringing him into Organization work.
Key Events
- U-2200 is documented as Gua, a low-risk telepathic entity that can make people forget how to ride bicycles.
- An exhausted Quinn visits Gua after a difficult week and rejects repeated demands that she take time away from work.
- Quinn explains that Adam is deliberately kept outside the classified details of her work for his protection.
- Gua urges Quinn to trust and reconnect with her husband personally.
Themes
- Burnout
- Personal Connection
- The Limits of Duty
Chapter 6: Ojai
Memetics Division operative James Bess goes to an isolated property near Ojai to stop "Green," a rapidly spreading religious meme complex transmitted through the live streams of a young man code-named Red. Bess subdues Red and uses a red-and-blue spiral cognitopoison as memetic chemotherapy, intending to poison the hostile idea while allowing the human victim to recover. At first the treatment appears to work.
The apparent recovery is a trap. Red's questions make Bess realize he arrived with a partner, Gaines, whom he can no longer perceive or remember clearly. Then Red stands up fully occupied by the phenomenon. Bess understands that his treatment did not separate a human host from Green: there is no meaningful distinction left between Red and the idea using him. Exposure to Red's conceptual structure overwhelms Bess's defenses and begins erasing his ability even to perceive his own hands.
Because comprehension works in both directions, Red also learns through Bess. He perceives the Memetics Division personnel and infrastructure behind the operation, including engineers at the streaming services and division chief Czerny. Shadows move against those people, and the operation is erased from institutional memory. Bess dies knowing that what looked like a contained cult outbreak is already spreading far beyond him.
Key Events
- James Bess confronts Red, the focal point of the rapidly spreading Green meme complex.
- Bess administers a spiral cognitopoison that initially appears to have neutralized Green.
- Red's recovery proves false, and Bess realizes his forgotten partner Gaines has already been taken.
- Bess learns that Red cannot be cleanly separated from the hostile idea and is overwhelmed by it.
- Through Bess, Red identifies key Memetics Division personnel, after which the operation itself disappears from memory.
Characters Appearing
- James Bess
- Red
Themes
- Memetic Infection
- False Containment
- Bidirectional Comprehension
Chapter 1: Case Hate Red
Adam Quinn, living without any memory of Marie or their marriage, keeps himself constantly busy as a concert violinist while a vague sense of absence shadows his life. On the final day of a tour he finds black slug-like organisms emerging from his eye, then repeatedly forgets the discovery. He notices a viral practice in which people paint black rectangles and chant in an unfamiliar language, but only gradually remembers that the phenomenon has been present for months.
During the evening performance, Adam's perception finally breaks through the antimemetic layer. The orchestra and audience appear as grotesquely altered non-human forms, his conductor destroys his violin, and Adam flees through a concert hall filled with black rectangular "doors." Outside, the same transformation has overtaken the city. Towering dark entities walk among abandoned vehicles while occupied former humans hunt the few people who remain unconverted.
Adam remembers that the world should have been protected from something like this and that there was once someone whose job was to stop it, but that person died long before the apparent last minute. He is captured by the transformed people. They restrain him and begin physically and conceptually "correcting" him, forcing the hostile idea into the part of him that has resisted it.
Key Events
- Adam experiences signs of the spreading phenomenon but repeatedly forgets them.
- During a concert he perceives the orchestra and audience as transformed non-human beings and flees after his violin is destroyed.
- Adam realizes the black-rectangle viral phenomenon has been spreading for far longer than he remembered.
- Outside, he discovers that the transformation has overtaken the city and apparently the wider world.
- Adam is captured and subjected to the same process that has converted the people around him.
Themes
- World-Scale Memetic Capture
- Resistance to Perceptual Control
- Loss of Ordinary Life
Chapter 2: Unthinkable
Adam is tortured until the invading idea overwhelms him, and the world is remade around it. Yet a remaining splinter of his original self eventually begins to resist. A narrow, nourishing presence reaches him and pulls him away from the core of the transformed city. As he walks away, the infestation unravels behind him and a black slug drops from his eye and dies.
Adam regains consciousness in a deserted school with two fingers missing from his left hand and no memory of the period since the concert. The guiding presence, which he does not yet understand as U-4987, leads him to the library and wants information. Adam reads an encyclopedia aloud or alongside it, only to discover afterward that he remembers none of what he read because the entity has consumed the information. Feeding it leaves the presence stronger and calmer.
Outside, the world remains transformed. The sky is red, cities contain vast windowless sarcophagi filled with people, and kilometer-scale shadowed beings stand nearby. Adam scavenges food, water, clothing, camping gear, and a useless phone, then flees when one of the towering entities appears to notice him. He has no clear destination yet, but he is alive, separated from the collective transformation, and accompanied by the memory-eating presence that extracted him from it.
Key Events
- Adam is overwhelmed by the invading idea, but a surviving part of his identity eventually begins to resist.
- U-4987 pulls Adam away from the transformed city's core and the infection begins to fall away from him.
- Adam wakes in a deserted school missing two fingers and most of his recent memories.
- He learns indirectly that the guiding entity feeds on memories and information by reading an encyclopedia to it.
- Adam discovers a remade world dominated by sarcophagi and colossal shadowed entities and begins scavenging to survive.
Themes
- Residual Identity
- Rescue Through Forgetting
- Post-Catastrophe Survival
Chapter 3: Blood/brain
Adam follows the memory-eating presence north through a world permanently lit by a red-black object on the horizon. A Foucault pendulum convinces him that Earth is still rotating even though there is no ordinary day-night cycle. He begins calling his guide Sunshine. It steers him around the sarcophagi and eventually toward a place his mind strongly insists is irrelevant: UO Wyeleigh, still hidden inside the conceptual crater left by the Antimemetics Division's self-erasure.
Inside Wyeleigh, Adam finds power, water, dead staff, forgotten containment files, and the heavily sealed U-3125 room. Using recovered passes and floor plans, he descends to B30. There he finds the aftermath of Marie Quinn's final stand: eleven bodies around Marie, an antimemetic warhead, U-7381, the unused Class Z autoinjector, and Marie's red-and-orange director pass.
Sunshine then releases the memories it consumed from Marie. Adam sees himself through her eyes across years of ordinary life, love, fear, and work, but the memories do not restore his own recollection. He recognizes only that he and Marie had been married and that Marie and Sunshine deliberately erased the relationship to protect him. Adam reframes that sacrifice as something U-3125 forced upon them. With Marie's pass and U-3125's number, he decides to open the protected records and learn what did this to them.
Key Events
- Adam follows Sunshine to Wyeleigh and penetrates the antimemetic crater hiding the abandoned site.
- He explores the dead facility and descends to the sealed B30 engineering vault.
- Adam finds Marie's body, the antimemetic warhead, U-7381, the unused Class Z injector, and Marie's director pass.
- Sunshine releases Marie's memories, revealing Adam and Marie's erased marriage without restoring Adam's own recollection.
- Adam concludes that U-3125 forced the loss of their life together and decides to pursue the explanation.
Themes
- Recovered Evidence
- Love Without Recollection
- Blame and Causality
Chapter 4: U-3125
Using the protected U-3125 room, Adam studies recordings left by different iterations of Marie Quinn. He learns about the failed B30 plan, the missing irreality amplifier, and the possibility that an older Antimemetics site at Stanmoor contains another sealed project. Because his unusual natural resistance and Sunshine have allowed him to remain an independent person in U-3125's world, Adam records his own message and sets out for Stanmoor in the hope that Ed Hix or the intended weapon survived there.
At the edge of Wyeleigh's antimemetic crater, Red finds him. Red is baffled by Adam's weak conceptual presence and mocks his attempt to resist the reality U-3125 has imposed. Adam carries U-7381, but as he begins to aim, his intention becomes legible to Red.
Sunshine attacks first, not because it can injure Red but to conceal Adam's intent for the instant he needs. Red casually snuffs Sunshine out, and Adam uses the distraction to fire U-7381 through Red's head and then erase the remains. The surrounding metaspiders disperse, but U-3125 still dominates the world. Sunshine is gone, and Adam continues north alone toward Stanmoor.
Key Events
- Adam studies Marie's U-3125 recordings and infers that Stanmoor may contain another sealed Antimemetics project.
- Adam leaves Wyeleigh carrying U-7381 and travels toward Stanmoor.
- Red intercepts Adam outside the crater and begins to perceive his intention to attack.
- Sunshine sacrifices itself to mask Adam's intent long enough for Adam to kill Red with U-7381.
- U-3125 remains intact, and Adam continues the journey without Sunshine.
Themes
- Inherited Plans
- Sacrifice
- Conceptual Visibility
Chapter 5: Wild Light
Twelve years earlier, Ed Hix enters a sealed "Vegas room" built inside the skull of a Cryptomorpha gigantes at UO Stanmoor. Hix, Marie Quinn, Jason Lo, Devlin, Mahlo, and others use external memory organisms so they can discuss U-3125 without carrying the meeting's knowledge outside. Hix is shown research demonstrating that U-3125 is already incarnating in reality and is effectively impossible to contain. The group concludes that it must be destroyed with a synthesized countermeme more powerful than U-3125 itself.
Hix realizes that the laboratory for this project has just been built and that his team has already been placed inside. He is expected to spend as long as twenty years sealed away developing the countermeme. He resists the sacrifice, but the others make clear that nobody else has his combination of skills. Before the plan can proceed normally, Jason Lo, already compromised, produces a smuggled gun and shoots Hix and Devlin. Quinn kills Lo with a fountain pen and then his own gun. The sealed room is sabotaged, U-3125 floods in, and Fletcher is rapidly compromised; Quinn shoots her while she and Mahlo prepare to flee and use the DRY ERASE contingency.
Hix's human body dies, but the external memory organism attached to him retains his consciousness. He moves into the forged Hix body that had been prepared for his cover-story death. In the middle of an argon leak he fights a U-3125-compromised technician, disconnecting and reconnecting between the germ and the forged body to survive. Hearing the base's erasure warning, Hix descends toward the secret bunker. He has lost his team and almost everything about the original plan, but he can still think, and he knows he must continue the countermeme project before Stanmoor is erased.
Key Events
- Hix joins the sealed Stanmoor meeting where the group concludes that U-3125 must be neutralized by a stronger synthesized countermeme.
- Hix learns that his team is already in a newly built bunker and that he is expected to spend years sealed inside completing the project.
- A compromised Jason Lo shoots Hix and Devlin; Quinn kills Lo, then kills the compromised Fletcher as the containment room is breached.
- Hix's consciousness survives in the external memory organism and transfers into the forged body prepared for his fake death.
- Hix survives an infected technician and descends toward the bunker while the Stanmoor erasure contingency approaches.
Characters Appearing
- Fletcher
Themes
- Sacrifice for Containment
- Compromised Institutions
- Continuity of Self
Chapter 6: Tombstone
Adam reaches UO Stanmoor and enters the sealed underground vault using Marie's director pass. A hidden device in the airlock knocks him unconscious and completes a manual activation sequence. The narrative then reconstructs Ed Hix's years alone inside the bunker. Hix discovered that the desired countermeme could not be directly conceived by a human mind and that the enormous physical amplifier in the original plans could not actually be built by one person. After repeated memory resets, he instead constructed a physical imitation that functions as a conceptual anchor: a machine that looks and feels like an irreality amplifier strongly enough to support the idea of the real machine in ideatic space.
Hix also learned that he could not supply the seed idea himself. The finished system needed another person embodying an ideal capable of being amplified into something larger than U-3125. When Adam arrives, Hix tells him he is the wrong person and that Marie had been one possible carrier of such an idea. Adam still cannot remember her. The unused Class Z autoinjector provides the remaining path. Class Z reverses the ordinary memory relationship and forces lost experience back toward physical reality. Hix administers it while Adam focuses on Marie, and an animate memory of Marie Quinn emerges through him. In physical reality, Hix administers antiserum to limit further Class Z restoration while the restored Marie connects to the amplifier.
Marie identifies the seed of the countermeme in the principle that people deserve to be protected from fear: the Organization's ideal, "Freedom means no fear." Hix's conceptual machine amplifies that ideal and the restored Marie into WILD LIGHT. She ascends into ideatic space, where U-3125 is revealed as a vast idea complex that corrupts human relationships and values into their worst forms. WILD LIGHT supplies a new context in which much of U-3125 proves incoherent; its structure collapses and its core disappears.
Marie cannot remain near human ideatic space without distorting it in turn. She departs toward its deepest reaches. In physical reality the red false sun returns to ordinary yellow, Earth continues turning, and a normal dawn begins.
Key Events
- Adam reaches Stanmoor and is drawn into Hix's completed conceptual-amplifier system.
- Hix reveals that the physical machine is deliberately a conceptual anchor and that a suitable seed idea must come from another person.
- Hix uses Adam's Class Z mnestic to restore an animate memory of Marie and administers antiserum in physical reality to limit further restoration.
- Marie supplies the ideal 'Freedom means no fear,' which the system amplifies into WILD LIGHT.
- WILD LIGHT collapses U-3125 in ideatic space, after which Marie leaves human conceptual space and ordinary daylight returns.
Themes
- Ideas as Weapons
- Memory Made Real
- Freedom from Fear
Chapter 7: Epilogue
Years after the catastrophe, Mahlo visits U-0055 in an archive vault and describes what the new Noöspherics Division has discovered. More than a year of recent history is missing, vast spaces inside population centers cannot be perceived or entered, and an incomprehensible number of people have vanished. Almost no one outside the new division is aware that anything is absent. The noöspheric evidence suggests that an immense Unknown entered reality, later departed after some kind of conceptual conflict, and left a great new star visible in the distance.
Mahlo cannot remember the event himself. He questions whether the Organization resisted the Unknown, helped defeat it, merely survived, or failed catastrophically while remaining too secret to be held accountable. He worries that humanity can normalize and forget any disaster and asks what the Organization would have to become to prevent the same failure from recurring. U-0055 gives him no answer, and Mahlo knows the questions themselves will disappear from his memory when he leaves.
Outside Black River, the file's claim that Cryptomorpha gigantes is extinct is quietly disproved. Cela, an adult of the species with stronger antimemetic defenses, stands beyond the site perimeter eating a gigantic metaspider. Her mate and children are alive on the horizon. The surviving "ones who walk very slowly" and the humans at Black River occupy the same world while remaining almost entirely unable to perceive one another.
